This is different from topping, which is cutting the main stem back to a stub. Topping creates weak regrowth and a bigger problem five years later. I will not do it, no matter who asks. Pruning instead removes individual branches following the branch collar, the natural seam where a limb meets the trunk. The tree compartmentalizes the wound and moves on.
Why it matters
A tree that has never been pruned, or has been topped in the past, sheds branches in a storm. Heavy snow or ice loads snap limbs onto your house, your car, or your neighbour's property. A sudden gust tears out a whole section of the crown. The tree survives, but it is disfigured and weakened.
Proper pruning prevents this. By removing dead wood and weak growth before the weather does, I reduce the points where failure happens.
